LEED
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
Green Building Rating System is a voluntary, consensus-based national
standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. The
U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) developed LEED and continues to contribute
to its evolution. The USGBC is the nation's foremost coalition of leaders
from across the building industry working to promote high-performance
buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy
places to live and work.
LEED was created to:
DEFINE "Green
Building" by establishing a common standard of measurement
PROMOTE integrated,
whole building design practices
RECOGNIZE environmental
leadership in the building industry
RAISE consumer
awareness of green building benefits
TRANSFORM the
building market
LEED provides a complete framework for assessing building
performance and meeting sustainability goals. Based on well-founded scientific
standards, LEED emphasizes state of the art strategies for sustainable
site development, water savings ,
energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
LEED Credit 7.2
Heat Island Effect: Roof
Intent
Reduce heat islands (thermal gradient differences between developed and undeveloped
areas) to minimize impact on microclimate and human and wildlife habitat
Requirements
Use ENERGY STAR compliant (highly reflective) AND high
emissivity roofing (emissivity of at least 0.9 when tested in accordance
with ASTM 408) for a minimum of
75% of the roof surface; OR install a "green" (vegetated) roof
of at least 50% of the roof area. Combinations of high albedo and vegetated
roof can be used providing they collectively cover 75% of the roof area.
Compliance
1. Energy Star Compliance
BaySystems NorthAmerica
is a Charter Partner of the EPA's Cool Roof Products program
2. High emissivity (emissivity of at least 0.9 when
tested in accordance with ASTM 408):
BSNA's
EC500, EC700 and EC5400 all EXCEED the .9 bench mark
Read the emissivity and reflectance
test results.
BaySystems HIGH
PERFORMANCE ROOFING SYSTEMS dramatically
cut energy consumption, prolong roof life, and meet or exceed the
standards for LEED certification.
